Would seem to be a visiting P47 from the 325th FG, the "Checkertail
Clan". a lead group of the
64th Sqd went to learn about the P-47 in preparation for transition to
that airplane from the P-40s.

Paul Carll's P-47's. The razorback was Paul's first P-47 ( I
believe that Paul was even the first 57th pilot to fly a Jug). It
was shot up in a dogfight ( Paul got two of them in return ), and
scrapped. The bubbletop shown was the one he flew until he went home
in I believe June of 1944.

Paul Carll's P-40's. If you happen to buy any of the Osprey
"Aircraft of the Aces" series, there is a photo of Paul's P-40 #32 in
there, as well as a brief description of his victory over an Me-109 on
9/3/43 in the volume "P-40 Aces of the MTO".

late in the war we used a recently vacated German airfield at Villa
Franco - story as I heard it - German pilot landed in his FW190 thinking
his guys were still there - on landing roll saw all the P47s lined up -
fled the scene with engine idling and brakes set - infantry guards used
rifle butt to hole the canopy and while screwing around in the cockpit
pulled the gear handle - last two pics show we extended the gear and
towed it to the ramp - tarp over the canopy

"Since I last wrote we've done a lot of traveling and work. When we
got to this field there were still some Jerries on it but they were in
no condition to do us any harm- if you get what I mean. A Focke-Wulf 190
was captured intact-the others were burned in their hardstands. A funny
story about the FW-190- the pilot, an Eyetie, set it down and when he
turned off the engine was surprised to see a flock of doughboys leveling
rifles at him. He later said he thought the field was still held by the
Jerries- thatbhappened the day before we got up here." Picture taken by
Ken O'Boyle - above text written to his gal back home.

Charles McCreary was a 66th pilot - routine maintenance flight out of
Grosetto - someone left a dust plug in the carburetor intake - on
takeoff the engine of course fuel starved and quit and McCreary bellied
the bird in with the sorry result - McCreary was not injured.
