Ernest Newman (deceased Feb. 18, 1943- Buka).  Burial on Stirling Island. Their B-25 was shot down off of Buka Is., the Solomons, 18Feb1944 while parafragging one of Buka's plantations. S/Sgt Steinberg brought up two crewmen, including Newman, from the submerged aircraft. After getting them into a raft, he used a paddle to split one's leg and towed the raft clear of enemy fire from the shore. The two survivors and Newman's body were picked up by a Dumbo at sea; he was nominated for the Soldier's Medal for his actions, but awarded a Bronze Star... to the end of his days, Father (S/Sgt Steinberg) maintained that he NEVER should have been awarded a Bronze Star... "That's an INFANTRY medal!!".. he always said.
