"we were flying at 25,000ft when about fourty ME 109s were reported on the starboard side of the bombers, making a turn into the rear of the heavies. We crossed over and turned  with the 109s, falling astern of the enemy. I closed within 100 yards of a 109 and fired two short bursts. There were hits on the under side of the engine and cockpit. A moment later the plane exploded, with parts of the German aircraft striking the canopy of my Mustang. However, my plane suffered no damage. I wasn't touched either.

"Just as I was about to rejoin my flight, I saw another 109 heading down. I got on the tail of this baby and was still with him at 8,000 feet when the pilot decided to bail out. I hadn't fired a single shot. I saw the aircraft crash into the ground and explode."
