This crew (minus Hull) was forced
to seek the shelter of neutral Switzerland after being shot up on a
mission to Lechfield, Germany in April 1944. Hull had been injured on a
previous mission. Hull and Bill Proppe (shown in a photo with the a/c Lady
Jake also on this page) were high school classmates but neither realized
each other had served in the 466th BG until some 55 years after the war!
Lower photo shows the ground crew that shot down their plane, according to
Mr. Hull - "photo
taken from the ground as we were overhead that day. It was taken by a
friend who was living there at the time and still lives there at the
present time. The photo shows four German gun crews firing at us as we
were overhead on that day. The nearest crew in the one that actually hit
us and caused the damage resulting in our crashing on our return to our
base that day. According to him the picture was taken just seconds before
their shell hit us"

This is an interesting comparison shot. The top photo shows this
aircraft as the Woolnough Crew prepares her for overseas deployment.
They originally intended to name her "Desperate Virgin", but changed
their minds once overseas. The second shot shows the same aircraft
at Attlebridge after the noseart has been added as well as modifications
to the navigators window and the co-pilot's window. This a/c was
ditched in the English Channel on 12 August 1944 with the Hammond Crew

in front of their Liberator "Nobody's
Baby" That photo was taken in late August or early September of
1944. "Nobody's Baby" had to be returned to the States due to "war
weariness". It was not too long after this photo was taken that the crew
was divided in the two rotations for the fuel missions which proved
fatal for part of the crew.
